To obtain an Italian passport through the Consulate General of Italy in London, you must follow a specific sequence of administrative steps.
Step 1: Verify Prerequisites
Before booking an appointment, ensure you meet the mandatory eligibility criteria:
Italian Citizenship: You must already be recognized as an Italian citizen. (Note: Applying for passport issuance is separate from applying for citizenship recognition).
A.I.R.E. Registration: You must be registered in the A.I.R.E. (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero) under the London Consular district. Your home address must be up to date on the Fast It portal.
Registered Civil Status: Your vital records (birth, marriage, divorce, or birth of minor children) must be registered with your Italian municipality (Comune). Unregistered marriages must be submitted for transcription before applying.
Step 2: Book an Appointment
Access the official Italian Ministry portal: Prenot@Mi.
Register an account and select Consolato Generale d’Italia – Londra.
Select the Passports service to schedule your appointment.
Note: Priority/walk-in slots exist for pregnant women, adults over 70, disabled individuals, and parents with newborns. Children under 12 apply via post rather than attending an in-person biometrics appointment.
Step 3: Prepare Required Documentation
On the day of your appointment, bring the following completed items:
Application Form (MOD1): Duly filled out and signed.
Current Identification: Your previous Italian passport, Italian ID card, or an official foreign passport if your previous passport has been expired over 10 years.
Passport Photo: One recent passport-size photo (taken within 6 months) matching ICAO standards with a plain white background.
Parental Consent (if applicable): If you have children under 18, you must obtain written consent from the other parent, regardless of marital status.
Stolen/Lost Passport Reports (if applicable): A British police report plus the Italian form (DEN1) if replacing a lost document.
Step 4: Attend the Appointment & Pay Fees
Arrive at the Consulate General in London (Harp House, 83/86 Farringdon Street) during your allocated time slot.
Submit your documents and complete biometrics capture (fingerprints and digital signature).
Pay the consular fee. Payment at the counter must be made using a British Chip & PIN debit card (credit cards, contactless payments, Apple Pay, and cash are not accepted).
Step 5: Collection
In most standard adult cases where civil status and A.I.R.E. records are clear, the passport is printed and issued on the same day during your appointment.
If additional verification with your Comune in Italy is required, processing times may be extended.
